Riedel thyroiditis is a rare chronic fibrous thyroiditis in which the thyroid is replaced by hard, woody fibrotic tissue extending beyond the capsule into surrounding structures. It causes compressive symptoms (dyspnea, dysphagia, hoarseness), painless hard fixed goiter. Associated with IgG4-related disease and other fibrosing conditions. Hypothyroidism may occur; treatment: tamoxifen/steroids; isthmusectomy for decompression.
Painless hard fixed woody goiter; dyspnea; dysphagia; hoarseness; compressive symptoms; hypothyroidism
IgG4-related fibro-inflammatory process destroys thyroid parenchyma and extends into neck structures; dense fibrosis with occlusive phlebitis.
Corticosteroids; tamoxifen; mycophenolate; isthmusectomy for decompression; L-thyroxine replacement
Early diagnosis; evaluate other IgG4-related fibrosing conditions.
It is recommended to visit the Endocrinology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
