Hypothalamic syndrome is a constellation of symptoms from hypothalamic dysfunction caused by tumor (craniopharyngioma/germinoma), infection, trauma, radiation, or infiltrative disease. Features: appetite dysregulation (hyperphagia/obesity or anorexia), temperature dysregulation, sleep disturbance/somnolence, diabetes insipidus, precocious or delayed puberty, emotional/behavioral changes. Treatment targets the underlying lesion; hormone replacement as needed.
Hyperphagia/obesity; somnolence; temperature dysregulation; polyuria/polydipsia; precocious/delayed puberty; emotional lability
Lesions disrupt hypothalamic nuclei regulating satiety, thermoregulation, sleep, thirst, and GnRH/ADH secretion.
Treat underlying lesion (surgery/radiation for tumor); hormone replacement; manage obesity/DI; supportive care
Early neuroimaging; monitor endocrine axes after brain injury/surgery.
It is recommended to visit the Endocrinology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
