Viral Pneumonia

Viral pneumonia is pneumonia due to respiratory viruses (influenza, RSV, adenovirus, SARS-CoV-2, parainfluenza, human metapneumovirus), presenting with fever, dry cough, dyspnea, hypoxemia, and diffuse/interstitial infiltrates. Treatment: supportive care; oxygen; mechanical ventilation for hypoxemic respiratory failure; antivirals (oseltamivir for influenza, remdesivir for COVID in selected); ribavirin for RSV in immunocompromised; treat secondary bacterial infection; isolate; fluid management; monitor ARDS.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Viruses infect alveolar/bronchial epithelium, causing interstitial pneumonia and impaired gas exchange.

Treatment

Vaccines (flu/COVID); hand hygiene; mask; isolation.
