Sinus Arrest

Sinus arrest (sinus pause) is failure of the sinus node to generate an impulse, causing long pauses on ECG with absent P waves. Clinical: asymptomatic or dizziness/syncope from bradycardia; part of sick sinus syndrome. Treatment: treat reversible cause (drugs/ischemia/electrolyte); permanent pacemaker for symptomatic bradycardia/syncope; avoid AV-nodal blockers.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Degenerative/ischemic/medication effects cause failure of sinus-node firing.
