Atrial Hypertrophy

Atrial hypertrophy (enlargement) is dilatation/hypertrophy of the atria due to chronic pressure or volume overload, often from valvular disease, hypertension, heart failure, or atrial fibrillation. Treatment: treat underlying cause (valve disease/HTN/HF/AF); manage AF; echo surveillance; no specific therapy for isolated atrial enlargement.

Common Symptoms

Often asymptomatic; atrial enlargement on echo/ECG; associated with valve/HTN/HF/AF

Causes and Pathogenesis

Chronic pressure/volume overload causes atrial enlargement.

Treatment

Treat underlying cause; manage AF; echo surveillance
