Superior-vena-cava syndrome is obstruction of the SVC (most often lung malignancy/lymphoma, or thrombosis from catheter), causing facial/neck/arm edema, dilated chest-wall veins, dyspnea, and headache. Treatment: elevate head; oxygen; treat underlying malignancy (chemo/radiation); anticoagulation/thrombolysis for catheter-related thrombosis; SVC stent/angioplasty/bypass for severe symptoms; manage airway/cerebral edema; avoid upper-extremity IV.
Facial/neck/arm edema; chest-wall venous distension; dyspnea/headache; by malignant/thrombotic
Malignant compression/invasion or thrombosis obstructs SVC, causing upper-body venous hypertension.
Treat malignancy; anticoagulate/thrombolyse catheter thrombosis; SVC stent/angioplasty; supportive care
Careful catheter placement; early cancer diagnosis.
It is recommended to visit the Oncology/Pulmonology/Vascular-surgery department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
