Hypotension

Hypotension is abnormally low blood pressure causing dizziness, fatigue, syncope, or shock. Causes: hypovolemia, sepsis, heart failure/arrhythmia, medications, endocrine (adrenal insufficiency), or autonomic dysfunction. Treatment: identify/treat cause; IV fluids; vasopressors for shock; review medications; treat infection/arrhythmia/endocrine; monitor; patient education on slow position changes.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Reduced preload/pump failure/vascular dilation/endocrine causes low BP and perfusion.

Treatment

Treat cause; IV fluids; vasopressors for shock; review meds; monitor

Hydration; slow position changes; review meds; treat underlying disease.
