Urethritis is inflammation of the urethral mucosa, common in women, clinically acute or chronic, nonspecific or gonococcal; the latter two are similar and distinguished by history and bacteriology. It is usually caused by ascending pathogens. Symptoms: frequency, dysuria, urgency and hematuria; in acute phase men have urethral discharge, initially mucous then purulent; women have little discharge; chronic phase causes urethral stinging and discomfort, thin serous discharge, suprapubic/perineal dull pain and red meatus. Treat with 2-3 targeted antibiotics by pathogen sensitivity.
