Thoroughly treat acute pancreatitis, as many chronic cases follow untreated acute episodes. 3. Avoid or minimize alcohol; chronic alcoholism is a major cause; chronic pancreatitis patients must abstain completely. 4. Moderate diet, avoid overeating; elderly should eat light, avoid spicy/fatty/rich foods. 5. Maintain emotional well-being.
