Coccidioidomycosis

Coccidioidomycosis (San Joaquin fever/Valley fever) is caused by Coccidioides immitis; acute benign asymptomatic/self-limited primary respiratory infection; occasional dissemination to skin/subcutaneous tissues/nodes/bone/liver/kidney/meninges/brain.

Common Symptoms

Lymphadenopathy; eosinophilia; chronic cough; neutrophilia; cough with chest pain; low fever; fever with cough; hemoptysis

Causes and Pathogenesis

Dimorphic soil fungus; highly infectious (single spore can skin-test positive). Inhalation of arthrospores; rare fomite transmission.

Treatment

Antifungal, surgical, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

No prevention; avoid dust-generating activities (construction); wear mask/respirator if unavoidable.
