Crohn Disease

Crohn disease is chronic transmural granulomatous inflammatory bowel disease affecting any part of GI tract (terminal ileum/colon common), presenting with diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, and complications (stricture/fistula/abscess). Treatment: induction (corticosteroids; biologics anti-TNF/ustekinumab/vedolizumab) and maintenance (immunomodulators/biologics); nutritional support (enteral nutrition); antibiotics for abscess/perianal disease; surgical resection for complications (stricture/fistula/abscess not amenable to medical); monitor colon cancer/small-bowel malignancy; smoking cessation; multidisciplinary; follow-up.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Immune dysregulation against gut microbiome causes transmural granulomatous inflammation.
