The pathology of disease

Constipation is difficult/infrequent bowel movements (<3/week), due to diet, medications, pelvic-floor dysfunction, slow transit, or obstruction, presenting with hard stools, straining, and bloating. Treatment: lifestyle (fiber 25-30g/day, fluid, exercise); osmotic laxatives (polyethylene glycol/lactulose); stimulant laxatives (bisacodyl/senna) short-term; biofeedback for pelvic-floor dyssynergia; prokinetics (prucalopride) for refractory slow-transit; rule out obstruction (colon cancer/stricture/hypothyroidism/hypercalcemia); discontinue constipating meds; follow-up.
