The pathology of disease

Budd-Chiari syndrome is hepatic vein/IVC obstruction causing hepatic outflow obstruction. Budd 1846, Chiari 1889. Abdominal pain/hepatosplenomegaly/ascites/leg edema. Age 20-40.

Common Symptoms

Hepatosplenomegaly; hepatic venous outflow obstruction; ascites; venous thrombosis; varicose veins; abdominal pain

Causes

Hepatic vein/IVC thrombosis; webs; polycythemia vera; OCP; paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria; trauma.

Treatment

Anticoagulation; angioplasty; TIPS; transplant

Prevention

Treat hypercoagulable state.
