Diphyllobothriasis = Diphyllobothrium latum in human intestine.

Common Symptoms

Fatigue; intestinal perforation; diarrhea; limb numbness; constipation; weakness

Causes and Pathogenesis

(1) Etiology: adult up to 10 m × 20 mm; 3000-4000 proglottids; bothrial suckers; eggs 55-76 × 41-56 µm, operculated. Life cycle: fish 2nd intermediate; human definitive. (2) Pathogenesis: spargana in tissues; eosinophilic granuloma; migratory; can cause cerebral sparganosis via carotid/foramen lacerum.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

No raw fish/fish fillet; no salt-cold/smoked/juice-marinated fish; manage dog/cat feces; sewage treatment.
