Sparganosis

Sparganosis = Spirometra mansoni plerocercoid in subcutaneous tissues; ingestion of undercooked frog/snake, drinking infected water with copepods, or applying raw frog flesh to wounds/eyes. Temporary paratenic host.

Common Symptoms

Restricted eye movement; nodule; pruritus

Causes and Pathogenesis

Topical raw frog (folk remedy); ingestion of raw frog/snake/pork/tadpoles; drinking infected water (procercoid in copepods). Migration through skin wounds.

Treatment

Drug, supportive, surgical therapy

Preventive Measures

No raw frog topical; no raw frog/snake; no raw water.
