Hemophilus influenzae meningitis is a purulent bacterial meningitis caused by H. influenzae (mostly type b), historically common in unvaccinated infants and young children. Clinical: fever, headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, altered mental status, and possibly petechial rash; in infants, irritability, poor feeding, and bulging fontanelle. Diagnosis by lumbar puncture/CSF culture. Treatment: third-generation cephalosporin (ceftriaxone) promptly; rifampin prophylaxis for close contacts; Hib vaccination has greatly reduced incidence.
