Acute myelitis is acute inflammation of the spinal cord causing rapid onset of motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction below the lesion. Clinical: acute paraparesis or quadriparesis, a sensory level, and urinary retention, often with fever or preceding infection. MRI shows cord signal change. Treatment: high-dose IV corticosteroids, antivirals when indicated, supportive bladder care, and early neurorehabilitation; investigate underlying cause (MS/NMOSD/post-infectious).
Acute paraparesis/quadriparesis; sensory level; urinary retention; back pain; preceding infection/fever
Post-infectious/demyelinating/viral inflammation rapidly injures spinal-cord tracts, causing focal cord syndrome.
High-dose IV steroids; antivirals when indicated; bladder care; neurorehab; investigate MS/NMOSD
Treat infection; early recognition; neurorehab.
It is recommended to visit the Neurology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
