Motor-neuron disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of upper and/or lower motor neurons. Main forms: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, combined upper+lower motor signs), progressive muscular atrophy (lower motor only), progressive bulbar palsy, and primary lateral sclerosis. Clinical: progressive muscle weakness/wasting, fasciculations, dysarthria/dysphagia, and respiratory weakness, with usually preserved cognition. Treatment: riluzole modestly prolongs survival; multidisciplinary supportive care (respiratory/nutrition/rehab); prognosis limited.
Progressive muscle weakness/wasting; fasciculations; dysarthria/dysphagia; upper/lower motor signs; respiratory weakness
Genetic/sporadic factors cause degeneration of corticospinal/anterior-horn motor neurons, producing progressive weakness.
Riluzole; multidisciplinary supportive care; respiratory/nutrition support; rehab; manage dysphagia
Genetic counseling; multidisciplinary care; early respiratory/nutrition support.
