Essential tremor is a common movement disorder characterized by postural and action tremor of the hands, head, and voice, usually bilateral, with a positive family history, and improved by alcohol (classically). It typically worsens with posture/action and does not have parkinsonian features. Treatment: propranolol or primidone for symptomatic relief; deep-brain stimulation for medication-refractory disabling tremor; reassurance.

Probably cerebellar/brainstem oscillator dysfunction causes postural/action tremor; genetic predisposition.
