Multifocal motor neuropathy is an immune-mediated neuropathy characterized by progressive, asymmetric, distal limb weakness (especially hands), without sensory loss, due to multifocal motor-nerve conduction block, often with anti-GM1 antibodies. It can mimic motor-neuron disease. Diagnosis: electrophysiology showing conduction block, CSF (normal protein), anti-GM1. Treatment: IVIG is effective; immunosuppressants in selected cases; it does not respond well to steroids.
Progressive asymmetric distal weakness; hand weakness; no sensory loss; conduction block on EMG
Anti-GM1-mediated immune attack causes multifocal motor-nerve conduction block and weakness.
IVIG; immunosuppressants in selected cases; avoid steroids (may worsen)
Early IVIG; PT; avoid steroids.
It is recommended to visit the Neurology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
