Reye syndrome is an acute, life-threatening encephalopathy with fatty liver degeneration, occurring in children after a viral illness (influenza/chickenpox), associated with aspirin use. Clinical: persistent vomiting, lethargy/confusion, seizures, and coma, with raised transaminases and hyperammonemia. Treatment: supportive ICU care, control ICP and ammonia, correct metabolic derangements; it is largely prevented by avoiding aspirin in children with viral illness.
