The pathology of disease

Sensorineural tinnitus is tinnitus associated with cochlear/auditory-nerve dysfunction (sensorineural hearing loss, noise exposure, presbycusis), perceived as high-pitched ringing. Treatment: treat associated hearing loss with hearing aids; sound therapy/white-noise masking; cognitive-behavioral therapy; MRI to exclude vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) if unilateral/pulsatile; reassurance.

Common Symptoms

High-pitched ringing; associated sensorineural hearing loss; noise exposure; unilateral needs MRI

Causes and Pathogenesis

Cochlear/auditory-nerve dysfunction leads to central auditory hyperperception (tinnitus).

Treatment

Treat hearing loss/hearing aid; sound therapy; CBT; MRI if unilateral to rule out neuroma

Preventive Measures

Hearing protection; manage hearing loss.
