Acute renal insufficiency (ARI) is a syndrome of abrupt short-term loss of renal excretory function from various causes, unable to maintain homeostasis, causing water, electrolyte and acid-base disturbance and accumulation of metabolic products. It is acute or chronic; prognosis is serious and it is one of the life-threatening major diseases.
Polyuria; Shuai Dongyi; alkaline urine; azotemia; anuria; oliguria; hypokalemia; metabolic acidosis
Causes include acute/chronic glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, renal tuberculosis, acute tubular degeneration/necrosis from chemical or biologic toxins, renal tumors, congenital kidney disease, and traumatic organic lesions. Though many systemic diseases have renal manifestations, relatively few cause ARI; it more often follows systemic vasculitis, especially polyarteritis nodosa, essential cryoglobulinemia, SLE and multiple myeloma; diabetes itself can also cause it.
