Renal osteodystrophy is a bone metabolic disease from chronic renal failure, short renal osteopathy. It shows calcium-phosphate disorder, acid-base imbalance, skeletal deformity and secondary hyperparathyroidism: osteoporosis, osteomalacia, osteitis fibrosa cystica, osteosclerosis and metastatic calcification; in children it may impair growth. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms, prevent deformity/fracture, correct hyperphosphatemia and vitamin D deficiency, relieve hyperparathyroidism and prevent soft-tissue calcification; dialysis or transplant for worsening uremia.
Waddling gait; recurrent childhood fractures; poor muscle development; bone pain; genu varus/valgus or coxa vara; congenital bone dysplasia; chondrodysplasia
In early renal failure phosphate filtration is impaired, urine phosphate falls, serum phosphate rises and calcium falls, both causing parathyroid hyperplasia and increased PTH; PTH releases Ca2+ from bone.
Phosphate binders, vitamin D, dialysis
Control calcium-phosphate balance and secondary hyperparathyroidism early in renal failure.
It is recommended to visit the nephrology department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
