Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is systemic coagulation activation; simultaneous thrombosis and bleeding; shock/sepsis/obstetric complication; emergency.

Symptoms

Bleeding from sites; petechiae/purpura; thrombosis; shock; organ failure; prolonged PT/PTT, low platelets, high D-dimer

Causes

Sepsis; trauma; obstetric complication (amniotic fluid embolism, placental abruption); malignancy; snake bite.

Treatment

Treat underlying cause; supportive; blood products (platelets, FFP, cryoprecipitate); ICU

Dept

Critical care / hematology / emergency.
