Disseminated intravascular coagulation is widespread clotting activation causing consumption of platelets/coags; bleeding + thrombosis; sepsis/trauma/obstetric; treat cause; blood products.

Symptoms

Bleeding from lines/mucosa; petechiae; shock; known sepsis/trauma/obstetric; low platelets; elevated PT/PTT/fibrin degradation products

Causes

Sepsis; trauma; obstetric (amniotic fluid embolism); malignancy; snake bite.

Treatment

Treat underlying cause; replace platelets/fibrinogen; supportive; ICU; anticoagulation in selected chronic DIC

Dept

ICU / hematology / emergency.
