Hairy-cell leukemia is a rare chronic clonal B-cell proliferative disorder; pathologic B cells have hair-like cytoplasmic projections (hairy cells, HC). HC mainly infiltrate marrow and spleen; clinically splenomegaly, cytopenias, and numerous HC in peripheral blood/marrow.
Lymph-node enlargement; fatigue; thrombocytopenia; low fever; hepatomegaly
Unknown; HTLV-II/EBV/radiation/organic solvents debated; familial cases + chr12/14q/5/del(5q13) abnormalities suggest genetic factors.
Drug, supportive, surgery
Avoid excessive X-rays/radiation; PPE for radiation workers; pregnant women/infants avoid radiation. Don't abuse chloramphenicol/cytotoxic/immunosuppressants.
