Microcytic Hypochromic Anemia

血液科

Common symptoms

恶心、晕厥

The pathology of disease

Anemia is classified by red-cell size and hemoglobin content. Microcytic hypochromic anemia means small RBC volume with intracellular hemoglobin below normal.

Common Symptoms

Nausea; syncope

Causes and Pathogenesis

Developing red cells need iron, protoporphyrin and globin to synthesize hemoglobin; insufficient hemoglobin synthesis causes hypochromic anemia. On iron deficiency vs infection, views differ: iron deficiency impairs macrophage function and splenic NK-cell activity, reduces neutrophil myeloperoxidase and oxidative burst, blocks lymphocyte transformation and migration-inhibition-factor production, lowering cellular immunity. Others stress iron is also needed by bacteria and that iron deficiency offers some protection; infection is more common with iron sufficiency than deficiency.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

1. Feeding guidance: promote breastfeeding; timely add iron-rich/high-absorption complementary foods (liver, lean meat, fish); balanced diet; iron supplementation for pregnant/lactating women. 2. Fortify infant foods with iron. 3. Give iron prophylaxis early to premature/low-birth-weight infants. 4. Large-scale hookworm control in endemic areas. 5. Promptly cure chronic GI bleeding diseases.
