Hemolytic anemia refers to anemia occurring when RBC destruction accelerates and marrow hematopoietic function cannot compensate. If marrow can increase RBC production enough to compensate for shortened RBC survival, no anemia develops; this state is called compensated hemolytic disease.
Anemia; jaundice; splenomegaly; dark urine
Causes are broadly: (1) intrinsic RBC defects (membrane, enzyme, hemoglobin) - hereditary; (2) extrinsic factors (immune, mechanical, chemical, infectious) - acquired. Hemolysis may be intravascular or extravascular.
Drug therapy, supportive therapy, transfusion
Treat underlying cause; avoid triggers (oxidant drugs, cold, infection); folate supplementation; genetic counseling for hereditary forms.
It is recommended to visit the Hematology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
