Hemolytic jaundice is mainly due to intrinsic RBC defects or extrinsic injury causing massive RBC destruction and large hemoglobin release, raising plasma unconjugated (non-esterified) bilirubin; when this exceeds hepatocellular processing capacity, jaundice appears. Any disease causing hemolysis may produce hemolytic jaundice, including congenital hemolytic anemia and acquired hemolytic disorders.
Jaundice; anemia; splenomegaly; dark urine
Excess unconjugated bilirubin from hemolysis exceeds hepatic conjugation capacity; urine bilirubin is negative (unconjugated bilirubin not water-soluble), while urobilinogen increases.
Treat underlying hemolytic disease; phototherapy in neonates; exchange transfusion if severe
Early detection and treatment of hemolytic disease.
It is recommended to visit the Hematology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
