Acute posthemorrhagic anemia is anemia caused by sudden massive blood loss; common in trauma, upper/lower GI bleeding, obstetric hemorrhage and surgery. Rapid blood-volume loss causes hypovolemic shock; after volume is restored, hemoglobin concentration falls and anemia becomes evident.
Pallor; tachycardia; hypotension; dizziness; fatigue; shock
Sudden external/internal bleeding reduces total RBC mass; marrow compensation cannot keep up acutely; hypovolemia is the immediate threat, anemia manifests after fluid resuscitation.
Volume resuscitation; blood transfusion; hemostasis; iron supplementation
Rapid hemostasis; replace blood loss; treat underlying bleeding source.
