Anemia is defined as hemoglobin, RBC count or hematocrit below the lower limit of normal. Reference values: adult male Hb <120 g/L, non-pregnant adult female <110 g/L, pregnant woman <100 g/L. It is a common condition with many causes: (1) acute/chronic blood loss; (2) impaired RBC production (iron/B12/folate deficiency, marrow failure); (3) excessive RBC destruction (hemolysis). Symptoms: fatigue, pallor, dizziness, palpitations, shortness of breath.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Three broad mechanisms: (a) blood loss; (b) decreased RBC production (nutritional deficiency, marrow disease, renal/endocrine); (c) increased RBC destruction (hemolysis). Classification by RBC size: microcytic, normocytic, macrocytic.
