Senile purpura is purpura on extensor surfaces (forearms/hands) of elderly people due to atrophy of dermal connective tissue and increased capillary fragility; ecchymoses are dark purple and resolve slowly.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Aging causes dermal connective-tissue atrophy and loss of subcutaneous support; minor trauma ruptures fragile capillaries, causing ecchymoses.

Protect thin skin; avoid trauma; moisturize.
