Thrombophlebitis is venous inflammation associated with thrombus formation, either superficial (tender erythematous cord, often after IV/varicose veins) or deep-vein thrombosis (swelling/pain, PE risk). Treatment: differentiate superficial vs DVT; anticoagulation for DVT/progressive superficial; local care/compression; antibiotics if septic; remove IV catheter; treat varicose veins/thrombophilia/malignancy; monitor for PE; IVC filter when anticoagulation contraindicated.
Tender cord/swelling/pain/warmth; by superficial/deep/septic
Venous endothelial injury/stasis/hypercoagulability causes thrombus and inflammation.
Anticoagulation; local care/compression; antibiotics if septic; treat cause; monitor PE
Careful IV technique; mobility; prophylaxis in high-risk.
It is recommended to visit the Vascular-surgery/Hematology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
