The pathology of disease

Femoral aneurysm is focal dilatation of the femoral artery (true aneurysm, often atherosclerotic, or pseudoaneurysm after catheterization/trauma). Clinical: groin mass, pain, distal embolism/thrombosis, or rupture. Treatment: elective repair for true aneurysms >2 cm or symptomatic; ultrasound-guided compression or thrombin injection for iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm; surgical repair for large/complex; thrombectomy if acute limb ischemia; control atherosclerosis risk factors.

Common Symptoms

Groin mass; pain; distal embolism/thrombosis; by true/pseudoaneurysm

Causes and Pathogenesis

Atherosclerosis/catheterization/trauma causes focal dilatation or contained rupture.

Treatment

Elective repair for true aneurysm >2 cm/symptomatic; compression/thrombin for pseudoaneurysm; surgery for complex

Preventive Measures

Control atherosclerosis; careful vascular access.
