Popliteal vascular entrapment syndrome is anomalous myofibrous entrapment of the popliteal artery (and sometimes vein) by surrounding muscle/tendon, causing exercise-induced calf claudication in young (often athletic) patients. It may progress to arterial compression, thrombosis, or aneurysm. Treatment: surgical release of the entrapment; revascularization (bypass/thrombectomy) if arterial damage/thrombosis; early diagnosis prevents limb loss; differentiate from cystic adventitial disease/functional claudication.
Exercise-induced calf claudication; young athletic patients; diminished pulses on forced foot flexion
Anomalous myofibrous relationship compresses popliteal vessels during exercise, causing ischemia.
Surgical release; revascularization if arterial damage; early diagnosis
Early diagnosis in young exertional claudicants; avoid delay.
It is recommended to visit the Vascular-surgery department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
