Rectocele

Rectocele is herniation of anterior rectal wall into vagina (due to pelvic-floor weakness), presenting with difficulty defecating, vaginal bulge, and digital assistance to defecate. Treatment: pelvic-floor exercises; biofeedback; fiber/fluids; pessary; surgical repair (transanal/transvaginal) for symptomatic refractory; treat constipation; monitor for recurrence/incontinence; follow-up urogynecology/colorectal.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Weak rectovaginal septum allows rectal bulge into vagina.

Treatment

Pelvic-floor exercises; pessary; surgical repair if symptomatic
