Acute Peritonitis

Acute peritonitis is acute inflammation of peritoneum (bacterial/chemical), due to appendicitis/perforation/diverticulitis/pancreatitis/ischemia, presenting with severe abdominal pain, guarding, fever, and sepsis. Treatment: NPO; nasogastric decompression; IV fluids/electrolytes; broad-spectrum antibiotics; urgent surgical exploration (laparoscopic/open) for perforation/appendicitis/diverticulitis/ischemia; drainage of abscess; ICU monitoring; treat underlying cause; follow-up to detect adhesions/abscess recurrence.

Severe abdominal pain; guarding; fever; sepsis; by appendicitis/perforation/diverticulitis

Causes and Pathogenesis

Bacterial/chemical contamination of peritoneum causes acute inflammation.

Treatment
