A galactocele (milk stasis cyst) forms during lactation when one lobe drains poorly and milk accumulates in the breast. It presents as an intra-mammary mass, often misdiagnosed as a tumor. Structural dysplasia, inflammation or tumor compression causes ductal obstruction; sloughed epithelium blocks the duct, milk stagnates and the duct dilates into a cyst. Secondary infection causes acute mastitis or breast abscess; without infection it persists long-term, contents thicken and harden as water is absorbed.
Breast mass
Poor milk drainage with milk stasis causing duct dilation and cyst formation.
Observation, aspiration, excision
