Macromastia

Macromastia (breast hypertrophy, giant breast) means overdevelopment of the female breast with excessive glandular and fatty connective tissue, volume far exceeding the norm and disproportionate to the body. It may cause chest pressure, chronic mastitis, pain, heavy aching shoulders and inframammary skin erosion. Seen in married parous, obese women and adolescent girls, usually bilateral, rarely unilateral; often with ptosis. No strict quantitative standard; diagnosis by appearance and symptoms.

Common Symptoms

Heavy pendulous breasts, back pain, inframammary rash

Causes

Excessive glandular and fatty proliferation, possibly hormonal.

Treatment

Reduction mammoplasty when symptomatic

Prevention
