Echinococcosis

Echinococcosis (hydatid disease) = human infection by E. granulosus/multilocularis larvae; pastoral regions; 5% prevalence high foci. Clinical varies by location/size; cyst biopsy diagnostic; surgical excision.

Common Symptoms

Diarrhea; nodule; abdominal pain; calcification; cyst; pruritus

Causes and Pathogenesis

(1) Etiology: dog/wolf/fox definitive; sheep/rat/horse intermediate. Eggs → feces → ingestion → oncosphere → blood. (2) Pathogenesis: adult/larval attachment → intestinal mucosal damage/necrosis/ulcer/perforation; eosinophilia; ileum mid/distal 30-200 cm; white serosal nodules 0.2-2.5 cm (central coagulative necrosis, outer eosinophilic/PL granuloma); peritonitis/abscess/adhesive obstruction.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

Hygiene education; childhood hygiene; avoid infected animals.
