The pathology of disease

Benign splenic tumors include splenic hamartoma, lymphangioma, hemangioma, fibroma, lipoma; mostly solitary. Small tumors asymptomatic/afebrile; incidental at splenectomy/autopsy.

Common Symptoms

Bleeding tendency; upper abdominal mass/distension; gastric fullness; calcification; palpitations; tachypnea

Causes and Pathogenesis

By origin: (a) Splenic hamartoma: extremely rare (3/200,000 splenectomies; <10 reported cases in China); components match normal spleen (accessory spleen/nodular splenomegaly/choristoma); early developmental anomaly; disorganized splenic sinusoids, few corpuscles, absent trabeculae; gray-white/pale-red cut surface; solitary/multiple. (b) Splenic hemangioma: cavernous dilated vessels (cavernous hemangioma/splenic telangiectatic hemangiomatosis); fetal vascular dysplasia; rare. (c) Splenic lymphangioma: most common of the three (2/3); cystically dilated lymphatics (cavernous/cystic lymphangioma); congenital local developmental anomaly with obstructed lymphatics.

Treatment

Surgery, drug, rehabilitation

Preventive Measures

(1) Good habits; stop smoking/limit alcohol (WHO: 1/3 cancer reduction in 5y if no smoking); avoid acidic body constitution. (2) Avoid salty/spicy/overhot/overcold/expired food; elderly/genetically predisposed: eat cancer-preventive/alkaline foods; positive mood.
