Wandering spleen is abnormal splenic mobility caused by lax or absent splenic suspensory ligaments, allowing the spleen to migrate (often to lower abdomen/pelvis). Risk is splenic torsion and splenic necrosis; more common in multiparous women. Clinical: migratory abdominal mass, pain; torsion causes acute abdominal pain.
Migratory abdominal mass; abdominal pain; left-upper-quadrant discomfort; acute pain if torsion
Congenital or acquired laxity of splenic suspensory ligaments (gastrosplenic, lienorenal) allows splenic hypermobility; torsion may compromise blood supply.
Splenopexy; splenectomy if torsion/infarction
Early diagnosis; elective surgery to prevent torsion.
It is recommended to visit the General Surgery department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
