A thyroid nodule is a discrete radiologically or clinically palpable lesion within the thyroid gland. Most are benign (colloid nodules, adenoma, cyst); 5-15% are malignant (papillary/follicular/medullary/anaplastic carcinoma). Workup: serum TSH (if suppressed, radionuclide scan; hot nodules rarely malignant), high-resolution ultrasound to stratify risk (TI-RADS), ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology for suspicious nodules. Treatment: observation for benign, surgery for malignant/compressive nodules.
Painless neck lump; incidental on imaging; compressive symptoms (dysphagia/hoarseness); cervical lymphadenopathy if malignant
Focal thyroid hyperplasia/neoplasm; risk factors: radiation exposure, family history, iodine deficiency/imbalance.
FNA-based management; observation for benign; thyroid lobectomy/total thyroidectomy for malignant/compressive nodules; levothyroxine suppression in selected cases
Neck palpation/ultrasound; avoid unnecessary neck irradiation; iodine balance.
It is recommended to visit the Endocrinology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
