Pyonephrosis, also called pus kidney, is a very severe pyogenic renal infection with widespread destruction forming a pus-filled sac and loss of function.
Chills; weakness; vomiting; night sweats; low fever; weight loss
Most common is obstruction from upper urinary stones with secondary infection; next is infected hydronephrosis from renal/ureteral malformation; it may also follow pyelonephritis. E. coli is commonest. When an obstructed hydronephrotic kidney becomes infected and purulent, pus collects; acute pyelonephritis plus acute obstruction causes sudden fever, chills and flank pain, often rapidly progressing to sepsis; without timely treatment the kidney is destroyed.
Drainage, surgery, antibiotics
Treat urinary stones and obstruction promptly to prevent infection and pyonephrosis.
It is recommended to visit the urology department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
