Ureteral stones almost all originate in the kidney, either renal calculi or fragments after ESWL. Primary ureteral stones are rare. With stricture, diverticulum or foreign body, stasis and infection promote stones. Most are single, bilateral in about 2%-6%. Common in young adults, peak 20-40 years, male:female 4.5:1, most in the distal ureter (50%-60%). They cause obstruction, hydronephrosis and, when severe, loss of renal function.
Pallor; diarrhea; postrenal renal failure; ureteral pain; nausea; urgency
The ureter is narrow with physiologic narrow points where small stones easily lodge and impact; stones descending from the kidney get stuck at these narrow points.
