The pathology of disease

Urinary calculi, or urolithiasis, may occur anywhere in the urinary tract. By site they are upper-tract (renal and ureteral) or lower-tract (bladder and urethral). Upper-tract stones mainly cause flank pain, sometimes renal colic; lower-tract stones mainly cause voiding symptoms, dysuria, interruption, split stream, and with infection cause dysuria, frequency, urgency and hematuria. Upper-tract stones peak at 30-50 years, male > female; lower-tract stones are common in older men with prostatic hyperplasia. Impacted urethral stones cause dysuria and pain and need timely treatment.

Common Symptoms

Flank pain; renal colic; dysuria; hematuria; frequency; urgency

Causes

Metabolic factors, urinary stasis, infection, diet and reduced fluid intake promote stone formation; stone composition varies by site.
