The pathology of disease

Urethral stones are uncommon clinically; most come from the bladder or above (renal, ureteral or bladder stones). On passage they may lodge in the urethra, impacting the prostatic urethra, navicular fossa or external meatus; a few follow stricture, atresia, foreign body or diverticulum. Primary urethral stones are very rare and usually single; infected stones are often struvite; female stones mostly lie in urethral diverticula.

Common Symptoms

Hematuria; male dysuria with stabbing pain; foreign-body sensation on urination; diffuse urethral infiltration; urinary obstruction; thickened hard urethra; fluctuating stream; urinary retention; urethral stricture; urgency

Causes

Primary urethral stones form in the urethra, caused by stricture, infection, retention cysts, mucosal injury, diverticulum and foreign bodies; secondary stones descend from the bladder.

Treatment

Endoscopic removal, lithotripsy, treat stricture

Prevention

Treat urethral stricture, infection and diverticulum promptly.
