Nephroptosis

Nephroptosis means the kidney moves beyond the normal range with breathing, causing urinary and other symptoms. The normal kidney moves up to 3 cm with breathing. Most patients have lumbar soreness; some have chronic urinary infection symptoms such as frequency and urgency; a few have low or recurrent fever, occasionally lower-limb edema.

Common Symptoms

Lumbar pain with renal percussion tenderness; dizziness; fatigue; nausea; dyspepsia; belching

Causes

It may relate to trauma (falls, violent shaking), long sitting or standing, shallow renal fossa, long renal pedicle, reduced perirenal fat and loose perirenal connective tissue; increased abdominal pressure (chronic cough, constipation) or sudden reduction (childbirth) also contribute.

Treatment

Supportive, renal suspension surgery when severe

Prevention

Strengthen abdominal wall, avoid sudden weight loss and long standing.
