A calyceal diverticulum is a cystic cavity lined by transitional epithelium within the renal parenchyma, communicating with the pelvis or a calyx through a narrow channel. It has no secretory function but urine can reflux into it. First described by Rayer in 1841, it may be multiple, located anywhere in the kidney, though the upper calyx is more often involved.

The cause is unclear; similar incidence in children and adults suggests an embryologic basis. In early embryogenesis certain 3rd and 4th ureteric branches form and then regress; if one persists as a separate branch it may form a diverticulum. By mechanism it is congenital or acquired; most childhood cases are congenital.
Observation, surgery when symptomatic

It is recommended to visit the urology department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
